Time To Turn Bashing Into Something Productive For All Of Us [Start Ups]

There is one type of post that is common in the tech blogosphere industry, and that is a bash post. We all (including I) love bashing the latest start up we think is going to be full of epic fail, and venting out our opinions in such a fashion does some great things for us. Here are the two biggest benefits of bitching:

1. TRAFFIC/REACTIONS

Oh yes, every one just loves to debate a good ole' bash post. It doesn't matter if you're bashing the lowliest, least known start up in the world. If a blogger bashes, the hits will roll in like Clicky just went on cocaine.

AND THE COMMENTS!

So much passion, so much love and so much hate! We bloggers couldn't dare pass up such a reaction to fulfill our own self indulgent ways. Hell, why do you think most of us our bloggers? It's called social MEdia for a reason.

2. We're Lazy

Yes, most bloggers are the most efficiently lazy people I probably know. We like things to be fast and streamlined with the biggest amount of return. Bashing does this quite well, and taking an extra thirty minutes of our day to think of things to potentially improve a start ups problem is simply not as rewarding, nor as efficient, and here's why.

Bash and thirty minutes of writing = a shit ton of hits and reactions.

Suggestions and an hour and a half writing = shit for traffic and no reactions.

Obviously the ROI on being helpful is mildly depressing. Hence the reason for bash posts.

BUT! There is a problem with bash posts! Sure, the hits might be amazing, and SURE, the reactions are pretty... ok, really.., nice. Keep this in mind, in the process, you are ticking off a lot of people.

I have discovered it's not good to piss people off (who woulda thunk that one).

I have ticked off a fair number of people in my day via bash posts, some of these people are pretty salient dudes I have managed to piss off. I can honestly tell you I am regretting every single one of those posts now.

With bash posts, you take a good hit to your credibility, as well as whatever clout you have gained over your tenure. The traffic you get in the short term is simply not worth it in the long term.

So, I am going to start changing that personally, and in the process hope others follow by taking the time to be helpful rather than being a prick.

Every time I have a disagreement, do not like, or simply downright can't stand what a start up, company, hell, even a person is doing, I am going to ask myself one simple question, "What could improve this situation?".

When I can answer that question is when I know I should tweet, blog, or socialmedialize my opinion about a person, product or start up to the world. Not anytime before, and you can take what I just said as a promise, and I would like whoever is blogging and listening to follow this logic with me.

It's better for us all in the long run, and deep down you all know it.

The numbers will be bigger in the end, I promise.
