Many schools block social networks that are even remotely Facebookish in nature.
At my school, lesser known social networks such as Simler and Cliqset are blocked under the social networking category. Thankfully, e-mail has been spared the filter due to the fact it is deemed by many schools as a “professional” way to communicate with teachers as well as send papers home when the need arises.
How long will this be though?
As Gmail leads the forefront of mixing social networking and email, others will follow, and you can be sure that eventually, students will be using them. To a public school, this is simply not tolerable since social networking in nearly all of its forms are deemed to be “scary” and a “distraction.” I mean, my god, a kid won’t find a way to distract themselves in some other form or fashion on a computer if you block Facebook!
So my question is, will schools start blocking e-mail? It is inevitable if social and email continue to mix the way it is now, public schools are still much too fearful of social media, and god only knows what some crazy parents might say if schools allowed such activity within an email application.
What do you think? Should high school students be worried that one day, their email access will one day be no more?
Want to comment? Sorry, I have disabled those, but I respond to nearly every e-mail I receive. So why not drop me a line at holdenpage@pagesaresocial.com
