Why Google Needs To Keep Murdoch

Google has recently made some deals that will hopefully keep Murdoch happy. Good on Google, cause they need to, at least somewhat.

Many people have argued that Murdoch is being a bit too err… “pissy” about Google and that Google should basically tell them to, “screw off”. They provides the hits that make up for the majority of their traffic after all.

Here’s the problem, if Google does tell Murdoch essentially to screw off, Google is no longer providing authorative, reliable news to the rest of the world.

Sorry, but in the eyes of the public, blogs are nothing.

My mom doesn’t give a damn about TechCrunch, Mashable or other tech sites. Nor does she care about all those other blogs covering a wide array of topics.

She does care about what CNN has to say or write, or in this case, FOX. As far as she knows, FOX (you can argue this till the cows come home, FOX is huge for a reason) is a trusted source of news and she will continue to click through to those sites. If Google doesn’t offer her the trusted news she has come to expect, but offers a bunch of blogs that she doesn’t know of or trust, Google has lost a potential click on an ad. Google realizes this and is not willing to risk that.

Blogs are simply not a recognized by the majority of people as a trusted source of news. To be quite honest, I don’t look at blogs as trustworthy either. We are an eccentric group of people who embrace pushing out stories quick, taking an extremely opinionated stance and then sometimes bother to fact check (usually it takes a commenter or two to get us to do something about it). Not to mention headlines that are usually misleading to draw viewers in.

Murdoch is going to get his way whether you or Google like it or not. Sorry to burst your bubbles bloggers.
