Is Competing Against Google Worth It?

I love Google with all my heart, but damn, do I feel sorry for startups.

The latest startup I feel a tad bit sorry for due to Google is Jolicloud, a linux based netbook OS.

take-tour

The point of Jolicloud was to provide an OS that was built from the ground up to be nearly completely dependent on web applications as well as provide a UI that would be pleasant to use on small form factor computer.

Sound familiar to a Google product that is getting a lot of love lately?

Jolicloud (which I find to be a better option than the Chrome OS) has now gotten the boot of any potential success it could of had. Hardware makers aren’t going to pay a bit of attention to Jolicloud when a Google brand OS is released that does the same thing (more or less) that Jolicloud does.

Why should they?

Google has the money to burn and time to waste to constantly develop the Chrome OS with little to no worries from hardware makers, Jolicloud doesn’t. Google is much less of a risk.

This is a problem for many startups, whenever Google releases a product, their will be editorial on that specific feature for weeks. But if a startup releases the same product before hand, and is somewhat better, it is lucky to get covered by TechCrunch. Not to mention Google will steal the audience to monetize its product that a specific startup could of had.

So is it really worth competing against Google? I know I wouldn’t have the strength to do it, how about you?
