Will Games Developed For The iPod Touch/iPhone Be Considered Duplicating Functionality?

Apple Hiring an iPhone Game Developer, Getting Even More Serious About Gaming? – Mac Rumors.

Yesterday, Mac Rumors reported that Apple is now on the hunt for Game/Media Software Engineer. Mac Rumors speculates (as well as others on the story) that this could be Apple’s new focus to take on the gaming market as well as the possibility of distributing their own games on the App Store.

Should this worry game developers?

If Apple takes on the gaming market and develops a few of their own in-house games, you can bet your bottom dollar that they will be pushed front and center and other games shoved to the back. This creates a fair bit more competition for game developers considering they also have to differentiate themselves from 100,000+ applications as well. All things considered though, this isn’t a huge issue, but a slight nuisance.

What would be more than a nuisance though, and probably should scare game developers shitless is if Apple decides to install just one of their in-house apps by default on the iPod Touch line. This would not be a surprising move, considering most platforms come with games in some form or fashion, and since the iPod touch is looking more like a gaming platform everyday, it would make sense to do.

Normally, this is not an issue, but we all know with the App Store approval process, it can be. There are countless apps that have been denied for duplicating functionality of a default app that they claim could “confuse” customers. We are not talking about blatant ripoffs that are denied either, we are talking about apps that have been denied which have an icon that looks like the iPhone.

So what if your game was a card game that had cards similar to that of the one preinstalled on the iPhone/Touch?

I’ll let you answer that question.
