Never Let Me Forget About You [Startups]

A few days ago, I received an e-mail from Dropbox reminding me that I am an inactive user and to feel free to come back! In that e-mail, they reminded me of what Dropbox is capable of as well as a link to freshen up my knowledge of how to work with Dropbox.

What is funny about this is, it actually worked.

Previous to this, I was quite an active user on Dropbox, but for some reason it just dropped off my radar. It wasn’t because the product did anything wrong, it actually works flawlessly, I just mentally blocked it. What is ironic about this is I needed to transfer a few files to my new laptop but I was holding off due to laziness. By them sending this e-mail, I was:

1. Reminded that I still had Dropbox installed and working, which meant an install on my new laptop and a quick drag and drop would transfer my files near instantly.

2. Reminded of why I chose to install Dropbox and the features it had.

Then, bam, I was back to using Dropbox. That e-mail has now made me, once again, a regular user and has even got me to suggest it to my friends. How awesome is that for Dropbox?

I believe that startups should really take a note from Dropbox in this scenario, do not let regular users completely forget about you. If they slowly start dropping off the radar and suddenly become inactive, don’t fear sending them a quick reminder you still exist. Sometimes things just get lost in the puzzle of life and no offense to your startup, but they could probably live without you if needed.

Now, obviously there is one issue with doing this as a startup, which is coming off as spammy.

But, I honestly believe that if you send one e-mail after a month or two of inactivity, you are doing no harm to the user. Just don’t continuously send e-mails reminding them they are not active, or else you will seem desperate for users and probably lose business that way. Otherwise, it is a smart move on your end and guess what? You can only win in this situation.

I know Dropbox won with me.
