Why Your Business Should Be Pimping SMS Updates

File:SMS test.jpgOne of your business goals when entering the social media realm should be connecting with customers and/or potential customers. Many of the biggest social networking sites such as Facebook and FriendFeed offer great ways to connect with customers and Twitter has plenty of applications that fill nearly every need. Often times though, one of the most over-looked features is the one that is the most important.

What feature am I talking about? I am talking about SMS otherwise known as text messaging. Currently, two of the biggest and fastest growing properties on the web, Facebook and Twitter, offer SMS updates to followers or in Facebook’s case, Fans, for free. As I stated, one of your goals for your business’s social media strategy is to connect with customers. SMS updates are an easy way to connect with your customers. Here are three reasons as to why:

1. Dedicated Customers

This is a great way for your hardcore/dedicated customers to keep up with your business’s latest happenings nearly instantaneously. Many people who visit/buy from one company pay attention to that product and want to be in the know. Making them aware that SMS updates are available will quench some of their thirst.

2. The Importance

Business’s offer specials, discounts and new products all the time. While publishing these updates to your Twitter and Facebook account might prove to be effective, more often than not your update will be lost voice amongst the noise. By encouraging people to receive your updates via SMS, it is much more likely the customer will pay attention to your update since the noise level is decreased significantly.

3. What Is There To Lose?

Let us be honest here, Facebook and Twitter SMS updates are completely free for both you and the customer, so why aren’t you taking the time to advertise the benefits of subscribing to your updates via SMS? All you can reap are benefits and there is absolutely no loss to you.

With these thoughts in mind about SMS updates it is clear that there exists a lot of potential value in pimping SMS updates to your customers. As I stated before, they are only beneficial to you and there is no harm to the customer. Does your business tout SMS updates as part of your social media strategy? Let us know in the comments.
